Wick Fisher White provided full mechanical, electrical, fire protection and plumbing design and construction administration services for the fit-out of a new pediatric 10-bed medical/behavioral nursing unit for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The fit-out included the renovation of approximately 11,000 square feet of existing space on the fourth floor of the Seashore House Building on CHOP’s main campus. The new unit includes (10) patient rooms with adjoining toilet rooms, nurse’s workstations, an activity room, a patient lounge and general medical support spaces. The new unit is designed to serve pediatric medical patients with secondary behavioral concerns, such as psychiatric issues, autism, eating disorders or other disabilities that necessitate a safe physical environment and close patient supervision. The design employed the latest technologies for maintaining patient safety in a medical environment.

Under the project scope existing MEP/FP systems within the renovated area were demolished back to shell and core, and new utilities distribution provided throughout. The project scope also included substantial upgrades to the base building systems, to maintain compatibility with CHOP’s current standards. These upgrades included replacing the air handler’s belt driven supply fan with a new direct drive fan wall array, providing new direct digital controls for two of the building’s air handlers, and transferring several of the building’s central HVAC systems/equipment to emergency power.
